Photograph of the Day

Shot from a plane window on the approach into New York, this monochrome aerial looks straight down the spine of Manhattan. The George Washington Bridge threads across the Hudson at right, the Harlem River curls away at left, and the island narrows into a haze of towers before dissolving into the Atlantic at the horizon. Contrails scratch across a wide, luminous sky.
Water frames everything. The Hudson runs broad and pale down the right side, crossed by the George Washington Bridge whose cables catch the light; the narrower Harlem River winds through the left of the frame, stitched with bridges. Beyond the skyline the harbor opens out and the horizon goes soft and silver.
